Hapag-Lloyd stated that through this strategic investment, the company will secure long-term automated container handling capacity at the terminal and further expand its global terminal portfolio via its terminal and infrastructure division, Hanseatic Global Terminals. Dheeraj Bhatia, Chief Technology and Infrastructure Officer at Hapag-Lloyd and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, noted: "Investing in the Port of Rotterdam will further enhance the efficiency and reliability of our network operations. The terminal is a key node in the Gemini Cooperation and fully aligns with our strategy to build a stronger terminal portfolio in our core markets."

The Maasvlakte II terminal has been in operation since 2015 and is currently undergoing a major expansion to consolidate its position as a key gateway hub in Europe. The expansion includes the addition of 1,000 metres of deep-water quay, bringing the total deep-water quay length to 2,000 metres; increased yard capacity; the installation of four additional rail tracks; and the deployment of automated terminal tractors and other automated equipment. Upon completion, the terminal's annual container handling capacity is expected to rise to 5.4 million TEU, significantly enhancing operational resilience and better supporting future cargo volume growth at the Port of Rotterdam.

Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals, said that Hapag-Lloyd's investment is a strong vote of confidence in the terminal and is of great significance to both the Gemini Cooperation and the Port of Rotterdam, reflecting a shared commitment to the terminal's long-term development and operational excellence. He added that the expansion project is progressing steadily through close collaboration among the MVII team, the works council, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority. APM Terminals will continue as the operator, dedicated to making Maasvlakte II the best terminal in Northern Europe, with continuous improvements prioritising safety, quality, delivery, and cost, while expanding deep-water berths and throughput capacity to support customers' business growth for decades to come.
