Cochin Shipyard's ₹500 Billion Shipbuilding Project Gets Green Light in Kerala
Recently, the Government of Kerala, India, approved a major industrial investment plan to lease an 18-acre plot of land in Kochi to the central public sector undertaking Cochin Shipyard Ltd for the construction of a ship block fabrication facility.

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced at a media briefing following the weekly cabinet meeting that the project entails a total investment of approximately ₹500 billion and is expected to create nearly 2,000 new jobs, significantly strengthening the industrial and maritime manufacturing base of the Kochi region.
The land will be handed over to Cochin Shipyard on a leasehold basis; the state government will collect an annual land rent of ₹145 million, and with Goods and Services Tax (GST) included, the total annual rental comes to about ₹170 million. The long-pending land proposal has now been formally approved, clearing the way for the central PSU to proceed with the construction of the ship block fabrication yard.
The project will reinforce Kochi's position as a hub for shipbuilding and maritime industries, while also driving the development of ancillary supply chains and generating substantial sectoral employment opportunities. This ship block production facility is also a key part of Cochin Shipyard's broader infrastructure expansion plan. The enterprise is continuously scaling up its capacity to meet growing domestic shipbuilding orders and export demand.
This land allocation also demonstrates the Kerala government's continued efforts to solidify the state's industrial base through large-scale public sector investments, positioning Kochi among India's leading shipbuilding industry clusters. At present, India's shipbuilding sector as a whole is experiencing a wave of capacity expansion.
