SEA-LNG, an international cross-industry organization, has announced that Amazonica LNG, a Colombian liquefied natural gas (LNG) import, storage, and regasification company, has become its newest member.

SEA-LNG is dedicated to promoting LNG as a marine fuel and advancing technological pathways for methane decarbonization. Amazonica LNG specializes in LNG import, storage, and regasification operations in Colombia and is currently focused on developing bunkering infrastructure along Colombia's Caribbean coast to enable ship refueling.

Specifically, Amazonica LNG is a joint venture between port logistics company Retramar and private equity firm Affinity Energy. Its core operational asset is the Páramo LNG terminal located in Nuevo Sitio, Magdalena Department, Colombia. Situated on the Colombian Caribbean coast near Barranquilla, the terminal is equipped with a floating storage unit (FSU) and has regasification capabilities, as well as small-scale LNG distribution and delivery capacity.

Cartagena and Barranquilla, located on Colombia's Caribbean coast, are the country's key hubs for shipping freight and the cruise industry, with high port activity that provides a solid market foundation for the development of the regional marine fuel sector. In 2025, the two major local port operators—Contecar and the Cartagena Port Authority—jointly handled over 4 million TEUs of container throughput, accounting for approximately 63% of the total container volume handled by all public port enterprises in Colombia, underscoring the region's central role in container shipping.

The Cartagena cruise terminal serves 34 global cruise lines, reflecting its broad operational reach and significant industry influence. The Barranquilla Port Authority also reported strong performance, handling approximately 3.5 million tons of cargo in 2025. The diverse and substantial shipping volumes at both ports generate stable demand for marine fuel, providing solid market support for the establishment and scaling of LNG bunkering infrastructure along Colombia's Caribbean coast.

Against the backdrop of global shipping decarbonization, LNG is recognized as a rapidly deployable, efficient, and viable near-term solution. This fuel helps the entire shipping value chain reduce greenhouse gas and local air pollutant emissions, improving the industry's environmental footprint. Over the long term, LNG serves as a critical transitional pathway for the shipping industry to meet stringent international decarbonization standards. As compatible vessels and bunkering infrastructure continue to expand, the industry can gradually adopt cleaner energy sources such as liquefied biomethane and e-methane, facilitating continued low-carbon transition and compliance with evolving international emission regulations.

Alberto Consuegra, CEO of Amazonica LNG, stated that the company's core goal is to position LNG as a practical and efficient transitional marine fuel for South America. Leveraging the locational and port advantages of Cartagena and Colombia's Caribbean coast, the region is steadily developing into a modern marine fuel bunkering hub serving Latin America and the broader Caribbean. He added that this membership will not only broaden the company's global collaborative network but also enable joint efforts with industry pioneers to promote the adoption and dissemination of methane decarbonization pathways.

Currently, the global LNG bunkering industry is experiencing rapid growth, with over 220 ports now offering LNG fuel supply services. Among global orders for alternative-fuel vessels, LNG-powered ships account for nearly 90%. Amazonica LNG's accession brings Latin American port and terminal operational expertise to the SEA-LNG coalition, helping the organization integrate resources across the entire value chain—including shipowners, ports, fuel producers, equipment manufacturers, insurers, and classification societies—and further strengthen the global methane-based marine fuel ecosystem, comprehensively advancing the shipping industry's green and sustainable transformation.
